George Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory, describes long-term effects of television exposure. Moreover, the theory describes how those who spend more time watching television believe that what is portrayed is reality. As a result, those viewers have a misinterpretation of what is reality. The cultivation theory reminds me of my grandmother who spends most of her time in front of the TV watching various television series such as “Law and Order.” She often reminds me of all the things that I should fear in the world. My grandmother’s extreme caution reminds me of what Gerbner describes as a “heavy TV viewers.” This category of viewers are more likely than light viewers to see the social world as resembling the world depicted on television.

When we are born with a new pure life, we are introduced to signs that carries a full story within each sign and its meaning. As a culture we do things differently that illustrates our background and who we are as people. Growing up we learn the meaning of these signs with the reactions of our peers. Signs surround us frequently on a day to day basis, that gives us a sense of direction. Without signs/symbols the world would not be as organized.

Semiotics is the study of the social production of meaning from sign systems, the analysis of anything that can stand for something else. There are three signs that portray the object, the indexical signs are fully in relation with what the signs portray. Symbolic signs shows no relation with the signs that is portrayed. Iconic signs share a seeming to be what the sign portrays. Every sign/symbols serves a purpose in our organized life’s.

The great Greek philosopher Aristotle states that Rhetoric is the discovery of all possible means of persuasion in every situation. “Remember the Titans” is a classic film that we could all relate because it share all appeals throughout the movie due that the film dates back in time when segregation was still an issue. Pathos was demonstrated throughout the movies to show the heartache of what they were going through to build a diverse team, that prevailed over the adversity.
