An Open Letter to Donald Trump

Dear Mr. Trump,

Like many Americans, I find fault with your idea to “build a great wall on our southern border.” I’m sorry Mr. Trump, but I just have to ask… what in the world are you thinking??? Since when has building a wall ever been a good idea?? (Do you not remember what happened with the Berlin Wall?) The lack of common sense aside, building a wall is a bad idea because it is doing the one thing you are saying is bad! Within Why Border Enforcement Backfired by Massey, Durand, and Pren, one sees that increased border enforcement backfired because it changed a “circular flow of male workers going to three states into a settled population of families living in 50 states” (Massey et al. 1558). This shift occurred due to the “increased costs of border crossing and also to put off the physical risks of clandestine crossings in the future” (Massey et al. 1565). I hate to break it to you Mr. Trump, but your plan to build a wall will only cause more illegal immigrants to live within the United States because, honestly, who would want to risk their life to go over your wall a second-time? (Though honestly, how many people would actually immigrate into a country run by you? Just wondering…)

Here’s the thing, Mr. Trump, I am sure you mean well, but if you actually wanted to decrease the amount of illegal immigrants in our country, you wouldn’t have to do anything. No really, I’m serious. If you (somehow) win the Presidency and not increase border security, the “undocumented population would likely [grow] substantially less” (Massey et al. 1593). In fact, “granting legal status to undocumented migrants already present in the United States would probably increase their rate of return migration” (Massey et al. 1596). Therefore, you can clearly see why your wall is logically not a smart idea at all. But then again, who cares about logic when it comes to politics?

Sincerely,

An Educated Female Who Was Appalled by Your Comments Last Week and Won’t Accept Your Apology
