Week #6
Both organizations, Hope 4 Gaston and the Dream Center, were birthed out of Bethlehem Church by members who desired to make a difference in the community. Bethlehem Church used to be a baptist church, started in southern North Carolina. While the ideals and concepts that both work to implement in their projects are innovative and cutting edge, the volunteers and employees mainly represent the middle class. Most are from southern backgrounds and are native to North Carolina, however there are some individuals from all over the nation who have made their way to this lovely state. The companies both represent humble, small town individuals working to make a difference in their community, but not in traditional senses. The individuals behind the projects are geared towards making corrective adjustments in traditional charity structures in order to elicit the most change in the lives of local individuals.
The highlight of my week, by far, was seeing all the hard work we have put into preparation for Runners Camp pay off as the week was a huge success. Many children joined us for a new take on “Vacation Bible School,” as we were able to introduce children from an underprivileged neighborhood not only to track and field events, but also to the love of Jesus. Runners Camp is put on each year by the Dream Center and supported by numerous local churches who supply participants and volunteers. This camp was so refreshing to see occur because children are given the encouragement of hearing the Gospel and the excitement of participating in a new sport that could carry them through middle and high school, and possibly through college. I was so pleased to be able to help coordinate such a beneficial communal event that reached many citizens in an underprivileged area of Bessemer City.
