Getting ready for YWPL!

Hello everyone! This week was pretty busy at Running Start as we prepared for the organization’s biggest event of the year which is the Young Women’s Political Leadership program. 65 high school women from different states and different religious, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds will come together at Georgetown University for one week to learn about the importance of women in politics, networking, and leadership skills. I’m super excited for next Wednesday, which is the day where the whole program travels to Capitol Hill to meet with students’ representatives. We will also be meeting with Congresswomen on Wednesday as part of a women in politics panel. I am fortunate to work with 9 other amazing interns from all over the country. We have students interning from Cornell University, Davidson College, a graduate of Howard University, and schools like Salem State University, St. Louis University, and California State University. There are 5 people on staff at Running Start! Something I love about the organization is that it is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization. Running Start was founded in 2007 by Susannah Wellford with the mission of inspiring and motivating young women and girls to run for political office and holding leadership positions. Running Start hosts multiple annual programs including Elect Her: Campus Women Win, Young Women’s Political Summit, Young Women’s Political Leadership program, and the Star Fellowship program. Each of the people I work with are passionate about diversifying our elected officials and particularly empowering women from a young age from all backgrounds and all parties to run for office whether that be at the local level in a school district or for Congress.

The highlight of my week was attending the Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park with some of my friends and fellow interns! It was such an incredible experience and it was fun to see and feel the enthusiasm in the ballpark. The Democrats won the game 11-2! ALSO, I saw Congressman John Lewis at the game which was AMAZING!

Happy Sunday & Go Deacs!

Best,

Daniella Feijoo

I’m so happy (and a little jealous) that you were able to see the Congressional Baseball Game. What a game to remember?!?

I just saw this article on CNN this morning that more women are running for political office than ever before. http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/20/health/women-running-elected-office-win/index.html
