Debate Lead Wake Forest – David Blue

Many Wake Forest students watched the sixth Republican debate which occurred last night in South Carolina. The debate, trimmed down to seven candidates, excluded previous debate regulars, including former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and Kentucky senator Rand Paul. The debate, moderated by Fox analysts Neil Cavuto and Maria Batiromo, featured many different topics, such as dealing with Isis and 2nd amendment gun control laws.

In interviews, Wake Forest students expressed a myriad of different reactions to the candidates’ performances and the issues discussed. Some felt that the candidates spent more time bickering with each other than truly addressing the core issues that are affecting our country. One such student is junior mathematical economics major Lindsay Graham, who said “It’s really uncomfortable to watch a cage match.”

Many students felt that the highlight of the debate was the heated exchange between Senator Cruz and Donald Trump. Wake Forest undergraduate student Linda Sui felt that both debaters displayed strengths, claiming that “Ted Cruz is sly, but while Donald Trump can be unrefined, he is straightforward.”
