Floating City

Travelers' Itineraries

Venice was a tourist magnet from the medieval period through the contemporary era. Venice has also exercised a certain fascination for artists and writers, meaning that a small but significant proportion of the millions of tourists who visited the city wrote down their accounts and impressions of the city. These travelers and travel narratives shaped our perceptions of how space in the city worked. For this assignment, each student chose a traveler and wrote an essay considering the way one particular traveler moved through the cityscape and reflected on his or her experience. Students also mapped specific points from their traveler's itinerary, choosing significant points from the narrative and adding quotations or pictures from the travel narrative to a map, creating a layered picture of travelers' Venetian journeys.
