Summer Entrepreneurial Experiences

Week 1 (better late than never!)

Sunday, June 8, 2014 2:47 am

Four days after my last final exam, I boarded aplane to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. I didn’t have many opportunities while I was abroad to start my entries, so I will now try to put into words the extraordinary things I’ve been a part of so far.Through the Volunteer Service Corps at Wake, I had the opportunity to participate in an international service trip with 10 other students and a trip adviser. After meeting for almost every Monday in the spring semester, we learned more about each other, where we were headed, and the organization we would spend two weeks working with. After meeting with a woman from Mission Emanuel, Holly Lewis, I got a better understanding of this amazing organization and really felt a connection to their mission: “a mile deep.” I talked to her about having an opportunity in the summer to work in the office after I got back from the trip; I could get background knowledge on the ins-and-outs of running a non-profit organization, something I am very interested in for the future. She immediately agreed that it was a great idea and that she was willing to have me on board. I was so excited! So after getting the logistics figured out, my internship for the summer included two weeks in the Dominican Republic followed by a two week break and then 6 weeks of experience in the Mission Emanuel office located right here in Winston-Salem.

In the Dominican Republic, we worked with members of the community that work for Mission Emanuel helping build homes, teaching English to 3 different classes, working with a women’s co-op that made jewelry to sell, and really experiencing the culture through music, language and food (which was all amazing!) I used this time to really look at the positives and negatives of the work that the mission does and where improvements could be made in how trips are run in the future. This gave me the ability to really know what happens in the groundwork of these service trips, that way in the office I had first-hand experience in being able to suggest improvements. I expect to learn a lot about what happens on the stage and behind the scenes in service-based non-profit organizations, which will help me in creating my own in the future. I will be doing a lot of secretarial work in the office (organization, fundraising, calling, mailing, etc…), however I believe I will learn a lot just by witnessing everything that is put into a service trip.

2 days after I got back from the DR, Holly went on a trip for a couple weeks, so as soon as she gets back, I will be working in the office with her! Here are just a couple pics from my amazing weeks there!

Putting in work!
