Graduate Lounge Alarm

Monday, February 18, 2013 11:04 am

Instead of having an alarm for the Johnson Graduate Lounge (which disrupts the undergraduates studying when a foolish grad student walks throug h without using their keycard) what if the door were locked always unless you use a grad key card (like the dorms after hours). Just a suggestion!

Thank you for your suggestion. I know that the alarm is very LOUD! That door is a fire exit so we are limited with the ways that it can be handled. We cannot just leave it locked, so there has to be an alarm and a timing mechanism to provide egress. Thanks for the idea, though!

Eight Floor Rattling

Sunday, February 3, 2013 5:04 pm

There is a rattling noise in the corner of the 8th floor of the library by the elevator. Someone came to fix it last semester after I complained 3 times, but it has started up again.

We will call it in again. We are scheduled to replace the heating and cooling system on the 8th floor this summer, so hopefully that will be a mor e permanent fix.

More Outlets Follow-up

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 3:21 pm

In the first floor of the Wilson Wing, can you please put more outlets along the back wall where the desks and tables are located?

We will also put some power strips down on Wilson 1 as a temporary measure until we can install more outlets. Thanks for reminding us of the need!

More Outlets

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 10:00 am

In the first floor of the Wilson Wing, can you please put more outlets along the back wall where the desks and tables are located?

Thank you for the suggestion. We add electrical outlets as we can afford them. Hopefully, we will have some funds available for that purpose at the end of this year.

Temperature in the Library

Monday, April 16, 2012 10:12 pm

I really enjoy studying in the library. However, I would like to suggest to regulate the temperature in a better way. I share the same opinion with many of my fellow students that it is too cold in ZSR. I sometimes feel so uncomfortable that I leave to my residence hall study areas instead.

I regret that you have been uncomfortably cold while studying in the library. I wish that it were as simple as turning the heat up, but it isn’t. ZSR’s heating and cooling system is divided into large zones and for the most part, cannot be individually adjusted. We are working with Facilities to replace these major building systems over time, but there are few short-term fixes. I might suggest looking for a study spot in a different part of the library. One of the quirks of the building is that while one part is unnaturally cold, a corresponding part gets unusually warm, especially when there is a significant change in temperature outdoors. Wish I had a better answer for you!

Unused Study Space & Outlets

Monday, November 28, 2011 9:52 pm

As I know that the staff is evaluating the placement of outlets in the ZSR, I thought I’d bring this area of the library to your attention. The 6th floor carrols by the windows on the Wilson Wing are a very popular study place for students. The only problem is that only two of the four clusters of carrols have outlets, so no one uses the areas/seats that do not have them. It’s sad that a perfectly good study space goes unused just because there is not an outlet there. I know the ZSR administration is working hard to examine the library to figure out what works and what does not, and that is hard to accommodate everyone. I just thought I’d bring it to your attention. We students appreciate all of your efforts!

Thank you so much for your suggestion and for your kind words. We wish we could make all the building improvements we need at once, but we are trying to do them as we can afford them. Good luck with exams!

Power in the Atrium

Friday, November 11, 2011 8:58 pm

I’ve noticed that a lot of people who study in the the main atrium (3 story room w/ tables) use computers. The inconvenient floor plugs are few in number (requiring power cord rental) and awkward to access. I recommend installing power strips on each table (leg, edge, underneath, etc) that could then be plugged into the floor. And if the room needed to be cleared, the tables could simply be unplugged and moved.

Thank you for your suggestion. We understand that electrical power is not adequate in the atrium or most other places in the library. We are collecting data from students and hope to have a renovation project in the atrium as soon as next summer. I will pass along your suggestion to our building managers to see if it could work.

Lynn Sutton, Dean.

some people do not realize that the 7th floor is a quiet floor. please put up signs

We put up 9 signs last week!

The first sink in the 4th floor men’s bathroom leaks from the hot water faucet when either faucet is turned on.

Thank you. We will report this to Facilities.

Temperature in 24 Hour Study Room

Monday, April 4, 2011 9:33 pm

Make it less freezing in the 24hr study room

Sorry that you are uncomfortable in the 24 hour study room. We will report it to Facilities. ZSR is notoriously difficult to regulate, temperature-wise. It probably has something to do with the recent fluctuations in temperature. We’ll try.
