ZSR currently has the largest exhibit in its history with the Rob Amberg photography exhibit. This exhibit incorporates 6 cases at the library entrance and 10 cases upstairs in Room 401-the Ammons Gallery. ZSR is a co-sponsor to the grant from the Provost’s Fund for Academic Excellence that is supporting this work.

Rob Amberg is a photographer who lives in Madison County, North Carolina. He moved to Madison County in 1973 and began what has become his lifetime project – writing and photographing about the evolving culture and environment of his adopted county. His first book, Sodom Laurel Album, was published in 2002 by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke and the University of North Carolina Press. His second book from Madison County, The New Road: I-26 and the Footprints of Progress in Appalachia, was published in 2009 by the Center for American Places at Columbia College Chicago.

Rob’s exhibit of photos parallels a screening of a documentary film called Over Home, by Kim Dryden and Joe Cornelius. This film follows Sheila Kay Adams, folk singer and musician from the mountains of North Carolina, as she fights to keep her family’s traditional ballads alive while struggling to overcome the loss of her husband. The tradition of ballad singing was kept alive in Madison County by Sheila and others.

You are encouraged to come to two events related to Rob Amberg’s photo show in ZSR:

  • On September 26 at 7 pm, Rob Amberg will lecture in the ZSR Auditorium about his life in Madison County, NC and how it informs his photography.
  • On October 2 at 7 pm, a screening of the film Over Home: Love Songs from Madison County will be held in The Barn.

These are unique, exciting and North Carolina-based events will surely be worthwhile and connect ZSR to our larger community. Please come if you are able.
