Emerging Tech Talk: Google Books Settlement

Thursday, December 18, 2008 4:46 pm

Today’s Emerging Tech Talk was on the Google Books Settlement with a brief introduction to the Life Magazine Photo Archive that is now available through Google.

I gave an image heavy presentation, so here is the bit about the Life (with extra notes slides):

If you’re interested in searching for images, you can go to the LIFE photo archive or include “source:life” in a regular Google Search.

Book Jacket Wreaths 2008

Thursday, December 18, 2008 9:26 am

It’s arts and crafts time!! Following the boisterous and jolly Holiday Luncheon at Graylyn, staff members gathered in Wilson 476 to make holiday wreaths using book jackets collected throughout the year. Following in true “Kindergarten arts and crafts style” we had pre-cut leaves, bows, ribbons, and holly berries. If feeling particularly gifted, we also supplied templates and fresh jackets for staff to cut out there own unique pieces.

The Staff Development Committee would like to extend a huge Thank You to Charles Bombeld for saving book jackets this past year and all those who attended! If you’d like to see photos of this event, check out the Flickr photo set.

Happy Holidays!

Welcome to the “Course” Blog

Tuesday, December 16, 2008 8:27 am

This Spring Semester Roz and I will be leading weekly sessions on instruction. We’re planning to cover a lot: instructional design, educational theory, teaching and learning styles, while giving everyone the opportunity to swap and share along the way.

We’re going to attempt to model teaching strategies along the way, so this is the online component. Please note that the schedule is in the sidebar to the right. We might post optional discussion questions/posts/videos along the way, too.

Feel free to leave comments to let us know what you’d like to make sure we cover, and we’ll do our best to meet your needs! :)

‘Tis the season….

Setting up those Christmas/Holiday decorations

Singing those Christmas/Holiday songs

Buying all those special gifts

Re-gifting those fruit cakes

And best of all, just like Santa comes to all the malls, Wake the Library comes to ZSR.

Every year around this time, ZSR staff pulls together in efforts to help the students through their final week of exams. We may not be able to take an exam or write a paper for them, but we do our best to make studying and research as pleasurable as possible. We provide around-the-clock coffee and serve snacks at midnight every night (or is it morning?).This year, Wake the Library Committee members worked with Aramark to supply Subway sandwiches, Chick-fil-A, and Pizza over the six nights. Coffee moved slower this year due to the new Starbucks in the library. However, Starbucks adjusted their hours staying open longer for the students.

The Graffiti Board is back in full force–with paint, not markers this year. We also provided a few dozen of the “Oversize Collection” wooden dummy blocks to use as portable graffiti boards.

The Late Night Breakfast – Fall 2008

Tuesday, December 9, 2008 4:14 pm

First rule of serving food at the Late Night Breakfast? Don’t leave your tongs under the heat lamp! (They get really hot!) On Monday, December 8th, I joined a group of Wake Forest staff and faculty as we served an all-you-can-eat breakfast in “The Pit” from 9 – 11:30 p.m. Entertainment was provided by various campus groups, and there were some great door prizes! I served up an egg and gravy pizza as well as “dessert pizza” which consisted of pizza dough with an apple topping.

This tradition was brough to Wake Forest many moons ago by Chuck Longino of the Gerontology Program and it is managed by Peggy Beckman. The surprise visitor this year was the Pillsbury dough boy!
